Three groups – three word orders

1. deshalb, deswegen, darum, daher → Connector + Verb + Subject

These are adverbs that take position 1, so the verb follows immediately.

  • Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
  • They can also stand in the middle: Ich bleibe deshalb zu Hause.

2. denn → normal word order (verb in 2nd position)

denn is a coordinating conjunction in "position 0" – it does not change the order.

  • …, denn ich bin krank.

3. weil, obwohl → verb goes to the end

These start a subordinate clause (Nebensatz).

  • …, weil ich krank bin.
  • …, obwohl es regnet.

Cause vs. result: weil / denn introduce the reason; deshalb / deswegen / darum / daher introduce the result.
